Bio-Fluid Mechanics Course at IIT Kanpur

Bio Fluid Mechanics
March 04-09, 2011
(Sponsored by Quality Improvement Program)
(Coordinator: A. K. Saha, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur)

Bio-fluid mechanics is the subject that studies a certain class of biological problems from a fluid mechanics point of view. Bio-fluid mechanics uses the general principles of fluid mechanics in dealing biological applications having fluid motion. The subject focuses on issues related to flow phenomenon of various fluid in human body. This subject also sees the applications in aerodynamics of insect flight, maneuvering and propulsion of various underwater creatures etc.In recent years, there is a surge in research on bio-fluid mechanics to have clear understanding of the various flow phenomena within the human body as well as the fluid mechanics applications in other animals.

This course aims at exposing the participants to the fundamentals of  fluid mechanics that can be applied to any biological systems having fluid flow whether it is human body or any other living creatures. The course is also designed to provide the participants with the knowledge of computations and experiments for understanding the flow behavior in a biological system. The focus will be partially on clinical applications such as blood flow through arteries and heart, ocular fluid dynamics, and emptying of stomach and the remaining course will be devoted to applications of fluid mechanics in insect flight aerodynamics for possible application in micro-air vehicle and related areas, maneuvering and propulsion of birds and underwater creatures.Other than the dissemination of knowledge, the course also aims to highlight the importance and excitement of experimental and
computational research on this topic by providing the participants glimpses of experimental and numerical facilities at IITK Kanpur. There will be practical sessions on the use of commercial fluid mechanics
software in which the participants will be shown demonstration to solve a bio-fluid mechanical problem of using experiments as well as allowing them to perform some experiments.
