What is this all about?
JOINT ADMISSION TEST FOR M.Sc. 2010
Admission to M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree and other post-bachelor degree programmes at the INDIAN INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are institutions of national importance established through an Act of
Parliament. All over the world, theIITs are well known for quality education in engineering and science, and research in frontier areas. The aim of the IITs is to build a sound foundation of knowledge, pursue excellence and enhance creativity in an intellectually stimulating environment. The current pace of advancement of technology needs a coherent back-up of basic science education and research. The vibrant academic ambience and research infrastructure of the IITs motivate students to pursue Research and Development careers in frontier areas of basic sciences as well as in interdisciplinary areas of science and technology. IITs have well-equipped modern laboratories, efficient computer networks and state-of-the-art libraries. The teaching process is structured to promote close and continuous contact between the faculty and the students. A number of financial assistantships and freeships are available to SC/ST and other deserving and meritorious students at individual institutes. From the Academic Session 2004 - 05, the Indian Institutes of Technology have started conducting a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). The objective of JAM is to provide
admissions to various M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.- Ph.D. Dual Degree and other post-bachelor degree
programmes at the IITs based on the performance in a single test, and to consolidate Science as a career option for bright students from across the country. In due course, JAM is also expected to become a benchmark for normalizing undergraduate level science education in the country. The M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree and other post-bachelor degree programmes at the IITs offer high quality education in their respective disciplines, comparable to the best in the world. The curricula for these programmes are designed to provide the students with opportunities to develop academic talent leading to a
challenging and rewarding professional life. The curricula are regularly updated at each IIT. The interdisciplinary content of the curricula equips the students with the ability to utilize scientific knowledge for practical applications. The medium of instruction in all the programmes is English.

Applications and Selection Procedures
Selection Process
Selection to OCES/DGFS is a two-step process: screening to short-list candidates followed by interview of the short-listed candidates. Except for RSE discipline (code 44), there is a separate selection process for each of the other disciplines listed in Table-1. RSE is available only as an additional option to applicants for Physics and Chemistry disciplines.
Screening for the Engineering disciplines is based on two alternative methods :
(a) Cut-off GATE Score for short-listing candidates for interview will be declared on the website.
(b) Written Test: It is conducted in each of the seven Engineering disciplines except Civil Engineering at the centers listed in the website( Table-4 ,along with their codes) for short-listing candidates for interview. Candidates who do not opt for GATE or who do not qualify on the basis of GATE Score may take the Written Test.
Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in it. The written test is scheduled on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Screening for the Science disciplines (check codes in website, codes 41-43 & 45-46) is based on two alternative methods:
(a) Written Test: It is conducted in each of the five Science disciplines at the centers listed in the website( Table-4) along with their codes for short-listing candidates for interview.
Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in the written test. Written test is scheduled on Sunday, February 28, 2010.
(b) GATE Score: In this case, merit list in each of the Science disciplines is prepared on the basis of valid GATE Score of the applicants.
Cut-off GATE score and Written test marks for short-listing candidates for interview in each discipline are decided after the last date of receipt of applications. A candidate applying for Science disciplines can (i) opt to appear for the written test, or (ii) apply on the basis of valid GATE Score, or (iii) may opt to appear for written test and also apply for selection on the basis of valid GATE Score .
Selection Interviews of short-listed candidates are conducted in BARC Training Schools at any of their location. Outstation applicants are paid to and fro second-class sleeper train fare by shortest route or actual fare whichever is less. Probable period of selection interviews is during June-July, 2010. List of short-listed candidates and Interview schedule will be declared on our website from May 25, 2010 onwards. Interview call letters will also be posted to those short-listed for interview.
Final Selection is solely on the basis of performance in interview subject to medical fitness.
This selection process would also be used for selecting candidates for research based academic programmes of HBNI and for Diploma in Radiological Physics programme of HBNI. Eligibility criteria and associated details will be available in the advertisements of respective programmes to be released separately.
There are two modes of application:
(1) Online, and
(2) By Post.
(1) Online Application: Keep the DD in hand for the amount of the Application Fee. Log on to the website www.hrdbarc.gov.in, and follow the instruction there for filling and submitting the Net-form .
(2) Application by Post can be made by taking two photocopies on an A4 size (~8.3"x11.7") paper of the accompanying format as Application Form. No separate application form is issued. Fill in all the relevant information, paste photographs on both the copies and mail both copies along with one set of enclosures and DD towards the application fee to the address given in the application form. One copy shall be returned to the applicant indicating the application number. That copy should be brought along at the time of appearing for Written Test and/ or Interview .
Application Fee: A non-refundable application-processing fee of Rs. 100/- (Rs. one hundred) for an online application and Rs.200/- (Rs. two hundred) for a postal application is chargeable from the applicants in General and OBC categories. The application fee is to be paid by crossed Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favour of Accounts Officer, BARC, and payable at Mumbai.
SC/ST applicants and Dependents of Defense Personnel Killed in Action (DODPKIA) are exempted from payment of application fee. Women candidates and physically challenged candidates are exempted from payment of application fee.
Those, whose final results for qualifying degree are awaited and/or are appearing for GATE in 2010, but are otherwise eligible, can also apply. If selected, the mark-sheet of final result should be submitted by November 30, 2010 in case of OCES and as per the requirement of the concerned institute in case of DGFS.

The International Symposium on Biocomputing(ISB 2010), in cooperation with the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) to be held in Calicut Kerala
International Symposium on Biocomputing
Organizing Institutes
1. National Institute of Technology Calicut, India
2. Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, USA
The last decade has witnessed a spurt in life science research with the advent of high throughput instrumentation technologies. The staggering volume of data generated from different “omics” experiments has stymied integration of experimental procedures and computational activities. In the present global scientific arena, bioinformatics has thus evolved as a complementary tool to biologists, assisting in interpretation of experimental data and also providing important leads for further experimental research.
The International Symposium on Biocomputing, in cooperation with the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), invites researchers from computer science, life science and statistics areas to a common platform for exchanging ideas/hypotheses, to promote future collaborations towards the development of improved and highly efficient bioinformatics tools. The symposium is also expected to witness the initiation of multidisciplinary interactions which will eventually blur the boundaries between in vivo, in vitro and in silico analytical procedures and thus help to gain deeper understanding of macromolecular interactions which ultimately define any biological system.

ISB 2010 is proud to announce the Keynote speaker for the Symposium, , Prof. Eric Jakobsson PhD, Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Biophysics, Bioengineering and Neuroscience at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
