Criteria for Doing Ph.D in India # 1

Many People from India and from other countries want to conduct higher studies like M.Tech and PhD in India. In this series of posts I would be mainly discussing the following Ph.D criteria's
1. How and who can do Ph.D in Indian

2. Where you can do a Ph.D in India

3. The stipend or salary or scholarship details for an Indian student dong Ph.D

4. A sure "guest write-up" from a student of top Indian research institute.

These topics will be in a continuous series of 4 posts . All the post are crucial and will be very useful for students of any branch of science and technology.

1. Who and how you can do a Ph.D in India?

Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D is considered to be the highest degree that one can possess(apart from Post Doctroal). It has its own charm and status. The most respected and educated class like Principal, Vice cancellors , scienctists, engineers, experts etc are Ph.D holders.

Ph.D in India is mostly(just generalized) carried out by M.Sc students after their completion of Masters degree, but now a days there is an increase in the trend of Engg. students turning towards doing Ph.D. Since there are certain direct oppurtunities like Ph.D after B.Tech/B.E popping up , students are showing keen interests. Even M.Tech students opt for PhD after their completion but the number is quite less(depends on the subject of study).

For an M.Sc student in order to conduct a PhD(any subject) in India he/she has to go through the following JRF entrance exams(JRF Examination is the first step in the process of admission to the Ph.D/ Research Programme):

  1. CSIR UGC NET Exam (For five different fields, refer my last post)

  2. ICMR JRF Net exam (http://www.icmr.nic.in/jrf.htm)

  3. ICAR JRF Exam(PGS)

  4. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) (for conducting PhD in all the IIT's)

  5. Joint Entrance Screening Test(JEST) ( For Ph.D in Physics, Mathematics, THeoretical Computer Science, Astrophysics, Astronomy., etc) http://jest09.veccal.ernet.in/

  6. NEST exam (for Phd in Physics for institutes http://nest.niser.ac.in/)

  7. DBT JRF exam in Biotechnology (http://oasis.mkcl.org/bet/StaticPages/Fellowship.aspx)

  8. JNU net exam??

  9. IISc entrance exam or through above exams

  10. Apart from this all the state universities conduct a seperate entrance exam or accept any of the above (depends on the institutes) as evaulation criteria for doing a PhD.

  11. Also all the national research institutes take into consideration some/all the above entrances as criteria for selection of candidates.
For B.Tech Students... GATE is the major , also some exams like JEST, DBT JRF, University based exams etc are the best shot for doing a PhD after B.Tech
