TIFR conducts summer programmes in which talented students are given an exposure to research activities in areas of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics (Astronomy & Astrophysics,
Condensed Matter Physics & Material Sciences, High Energy Physics, Nuclear & Atomic Physics and Theoretical Physics). The programmes are held at the Mumbai campus of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research as well as at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune.Typically, VSRP students will have just completed a year of their Master's programme, and get an opportunity to work on a research
project at TIFR during the period mid May-mid to July each year. At TIFR, research is carried out in frontline areas of all the fundamental sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, as well as in the field of Science Education. TIFR Scientists are world leaders in several fields and their published contributions to scientific knowledge are internationally recognised. Over the years, the Institute has developed many new areas of research as well as training programmes.

The Radio Astronomy Centre (RAC) is an Observatory of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune and a field station of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). RAC operates the large Ooty Radio Telescope. RAC invites applications for the following project posts available at Udhagamandalam.

1. Senior Research Fellows (2 posts, tenure 3 years) (extension after first year subject to satisfactory performance)
First class M.Sc. (Physics) with good academic record, sound knowledge in physical sciences and motivation for research.Candidates must qualify in NET/GATE examination. We are looking for young people who combine a basic training in the natural sciences with a lively interest in
society, technology or the arts, to explore issues in school and college education.HBCSE carries out research and development in education in science, technology and mathematics from primary school up to undergraduate level. This research is informed by current perspectives in cognitive science, developmental psychology, history and philosophy of science and socio-cultural aspects of science and education. Pre-Ph.D. programmes in these areas serve to orient students who may enter with varied backgrounds.
Practising science and maths teachers are welcome to apply. They would spend a minimum of two years at
HBCSE in order to complete their course work and initiate their research work.

Note: This is a programme in education. It is not a pure or applied science research programme.
Admissions are made initially for one year, renewable annually up to a maximum of five years.
A monthly fellowship of Rs 12,000 is offered, enhanced to Rs 14,000 after registration for Ph.D. In addition, acontingency grant of Rs 15,000 and a tuition grant of Rs 4000 per annum are available. Accommodation may beprovided on campus at nominal cost. In lieu of accommodation HRA amounting to 30% of the fellowship will bepaid.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research (TIFR), devoted to research and development in science, mathematics and technology education
(STME). It is seeking to strengthen its programmes, particularly,

What is this all about?
VISITING POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) has been established by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is located on the campus of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.
A small number of post-doctoral fellowships tenable at NCBS are available each year. Applications from those with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent (in any branch of natural science/engineering) and demonstrated research capabilities will be entertained throughout the year and will be considered in February and August.

Applicants should summarize recent research experience and include names and addresses of three persons who can be contacted for a critical evaluation of the applicant’s research. Applications will be accepted throughout the year.The fellowship is tenable at NCBS. Research Trainee position for Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Development at NCRA - TIFR

What is this all about?
Research Trainee (1 Post - Unreserved; HQ: Pune)

NCRA-TIFR is seeking highly motivated candidate to work on state-of-the-art instrumentation and software development for the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (including research on receivers, control systems, algorithms, digital signal processing, etc), while also working for a Ph.D. in astronomy.

Educational qualification: 1st class B.E./B.Tech in Electronics, Electrical, Communication, Mechanical, or Control and Instrumentation branches, or M.Sc. in Physics. Those appearing, or who have just appeared, for the qualifying exams may also apply.

Stipend: A fixed monthly stipend of Rs. 12,000 during the initial one-year training period as a Research Trainee (bond applicable). On successful completion of the training, the trainee will be appointed as a Research Associate (regular post) in the grade PB-3 Rs. 15,600-39,100 + Grade Pay 5,400 (plus allowances), with an initial one-year probation.

Age: Below 25 years on August 1, 2010. Age relaxation as per GOI rules applies to SC / ST / OBC / PH candidates applying for the post.

What is this all about?
STUDENT PROGRAM (SP2010)
NCRA runs both short and long term student technical training program. The short term programs are mainly during the summer and are meant for students in their pre-final year. The long term program runs during the academic year and are meant for final year students. Generally students from Pune are considered for the long term program.
Who Can Apply?
The SP programs are open to students in their pre-final/final year of  BE/BTech (Any Branch) or MSc (Physics/Astronomy)

What is this all about?

1. How much GPA / % is required to get admission into the VSRP program?

There is no cut-off GPA that is needed for the VSRP program. We look at the overall profile while making a decision. This includes academic performance as evinced by grades/GPA, referee reports, your write up, etc.

2. I have finished my MSc / am in my final year of MSc / am in the 2nd year of Engineering … but am interested in applying to the VSRP program. Your website says only pre-final year students are allowed to apply. Can I apply ?

The program is designed primarily for pre-final year students. We’re sorry, but given the response the VSRP program generates just among pre-final year students, we cannot consider candidates who have finished their MSc. While you may apply if you are in your second year, or in the final year, unless you are really exceptionally well qualified, the probability of getting admission is very low.

3. I will be having my engineering 6th semester exams sometime in June due to which there might be a clash with the research program schedule. could you please clarify as to whether this clash could be avoided. If you can reschedule your exams, then the clash can be avoided ?

The VSRP is an VERY INTENSIVE program, and we do not allow students to take off in the middle, or reschedule the timings. If you are NOT free for the ENTIRE period, please do NOT apply for the VSRP program.

4. It is not clear if any program is available for XXXX Engg. related research or if pre-final year XXXX Engg. student is eligible for a VSRP project in the YYYY department.

Anyone with any eligible degree is free to apply to any department. We do not restrict students from exploring projects in other areas if they demonstrate a keen interest and competency. Your research write up, recommendations etc. are all important, not just the degree / GPA.

5. I am doing my MSc physics at IIT-X.Actually i wanted to know how many students do you take from IITX ?

We have no fixed number of students that we take from any one institution. However, as we take typically ~40 students from all over India, very often, only one or two students are taken from a single institution, though this depends primarily on the merit of the student.

6. I am doing MSc in physics. I am super interested in going for a summer project on the topic "Spin injection through different g-factor heterointerfaces using negative trions….".Please mail me more information about the project as soon as possible so that i can apply for…..

The students do not decide the project topic as a rule. Depending on your interest and competency, the department will assign you a project guide (if you are selected), and you will together decide on the details of the project. If you would really like to work in a very particular area please mention your interests on the VSRP application form.

7. I am from India, but I am currently pursuing my undergraduate studies in the US. I am interested in applying to VSRP.

We are sorry to disappoint you, but at present, the VSRP program admits only those students pursuing their studies at institutions within India. We however would encourage you to visit TIFR and interact with members in your area of interest when you visit India.

8. Is it compulsory to have a detailed knowledge about the particular research topic of interest ?

While no specialized knowledge is necessary, we would expect you to have a very thorough understanding of what is typically taught at the Pre-Final year level.

9. Are we to undertake a project on the research topic and finish it in the two month visiting time or is it a chance to read and enhance my knowledge on the particular topic.

You will be working on a focused research project.

10. Will I have to compulsorily stay at TIFR during the full duration of the program ?

No, but given the intensity of the project it will be very difficult for you to work on it if you do not stay somewhere close enough. Participants are paid a monthly stipend of Rs 6000/-, Sleeper class return railway fare and are provided with shared hostel accommodation.
